Words As My Witness: Poem

There have been years when I haven't written a poem, and now that I told myself to write a poem a day for National Poetry Writing Month this year, I've written several new poems I like this week.

It started with these two.

Then, yesterday this one came out and I quite like it.

Words as My Witness

I spent 20 minutes

looking at all the emojis

on my phone

searching for the one

that would convey

the sense of

both wonder and dismay

that I feel for myself

when I think of

all I've put myself through

and overcome.

There wasn't one

that said,

“I am a warrior,

wounded and wary,

but still wondering,

'What's next?

I'm ready.'“

So I guess I'll use words,

create images with sounds

instead of pixels.

Voice

is vibration

and from that

all creation

began.

So let me begin

once again.

Phone not in my hand

but by my side.

I won't hide

behind a screen

but live in what's seen

and heard,

remembering

that what's true

is also absurd.

In the beginning

there was the word.

It said,

“You,

whoever you are,

are God.

Now go

and be

what that means

to you.

Don't ever dim

or destroy

that holy vow.

Be who you are

right now.”

Words as my witness,

I will begin

again

again

again.

For the record, I have written other poems that are okay or need some work. That's the thing with creating. It doesn't always turn into something ready to be shared, but the more often you do it, the more stuff you do have that you want to share.

This is great because I wanted to have a few new pieces to share at my featured performance at the Poet's Cafe on May 5th. Find more on the Poets Cafe on Instagram and make sure you follow me to get reminders of this and other upcoming performances. Come if you can!
