All The Reasons to Play Music

While I was waiting or my weekly music lesson yesterday, I noticed this sign. My teacher made a list of the titles of a bunch of academic papers on the benefits of music. Since he teaches at a school, many of them relate to the benefits for kids, but not all of them.

Apparently by learning music you can:

  • Boost memory

  • Enhance brain function

  • Help the cardiovascular system

  • Possibly lower blood pressure

I'm sure there's more. I'd love to find the "Ten Scientific Reasons You Should Learn to Play the Guitar" article.

Even playing something like classical music can increase brain function. That's one thing I do everyday. When I write, I turn on WSMR, my local classical music radio station. In fact, I'm listening to it right now.

Now, I know that you can't just read the title of an article and take it for a fact. However, I can say that in my own experience many of these qualities of playing music is true.

But, beyond that, I stand by what I said in my Instagram story above: My life is 1000x enriched by learning to play music. From learning a new skill, doing something different with my body, and having something to express myself with and share with other people, it's brought a bounty of joy to my life that I can't imagine living without it.

If you'e always wanted to learn to play music, just do it. Pick up an instrument. Maybe ukulele. Its easy and fun and George Harrison was known to say that he believed everyone should learn to play one. I agree.
