Show Up Today
/There's something that happens when you show up every day.
It's not about making something great everyday. It's about making something. That's it. Low stakes. Consistent commitment.
This is something I have to tell myself everyday when I show up to writing. I realize that it's been something that I've told myself for years in my massage practice. I used to put so much pressure on myself to do the best massage every time. Once I started trusting that showing up was enough, I started getting better results.
It's like when you see someone go on stage to play an instrument and they are so nervous that they mess up. There's something that happens to us when we believe that one shot is our only shot. Unless today is the day you're going to die, it's probably not your only shot.
When you make your practice something that gives you a new chance at a shot everyday, ironically, you live the day as if it was your last.
The magic happens when we hold in our head simultaneously the truth that today may be our last day and that most likely we'll also get to try again tomorrow. It isn't about saying, "Well, I can just do this tomorrow" and letting ourselves off the hook for today. It's about showing up today, and the next, and the next. That's how momentum is built. That's how skill is developed. That's how you release the pressure to do it perfectly and just start doing it.
Whatever it is you do, show up for it today. Then repeat everyday or week or whatever. You probably won't see the changes or growth happen but they will.
Show up in some consistent way every day for 30 days and tell me that doesn't change something.
