Best Haiku / Last Haikus
/For the last decade or so of my Dad's life, he wrote a lot of haikus. I don't really know how it started, but it became a regular thing to find a haiku in my inbox or have him pull out his phone during our weekly brunches to share his latest.
They would often be simple, yet profound.
There was one that was always the favorite. Though it's technically not proper to title haikus, he titled this one, "Eternal Happiness."
I be happy here.
When I'm not here anymore.
I be happy there.
After Dad passed in June of 2020, I went into his notes on his phone and found his last two haikus. They seemed to indicate that he had some idea that his time was coming.
Seeing an ember
Waiting to make sure it’s
Slowly going out
The older I get
There’s less and less time left for me
To do everything
Today we will celebrate my Dad's life with many beloved friends and family. I've been working on writing about his life and I'll post more about that tomorrow. Until then, enjoy these Haikus.
