How to Know What to Do
/Life bring all kinds of decisions that can be hard, uncertain, and scary. But you've got a built in system that will tell you in a single instant what the "right" thing to do is. It's your body.
Most of us make decisions with our heads, and though the ability to discern can be a great one, it only gets us so far. The mind loves to think, it's bullt for it. But it can also keep us in a cul-de-sac of thoughts going in circles over and over again.
The body feels things in a moment's notice. Getting better at feeling what's in your body is the key to making the best decisions for yourself when the mind isn't offering a clear solution.
Next time you're faced with a decision that you're having a hard time making with your mind, try this:
First, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Just feel the movement of your breath in your body. Notice the sensation of your clothes on your skin, the shape of your body in space, and let yourself settle in.
Next, pick one of the options you have the opportunity to choose. Imagine yourself having made that choice, what would it look like? What experiences would come your way? Paint yourself a picture of having made that choice. Let your mind live out that choice for you.
Then, notice what you feel in your body. Does your stomach or chest feel tight? Do they feel relaxed and at ease? Does your breath quicken or slow down? Trust what you feel.
Open your eyes and note what feelings (not thoughts) or sensations you’re experiencing.
Take a few cleansing breaths and then do these steps again, this time thinking of another option. Notice what you feel then. Most likely the feelings will be different and one will be more pleasant, relaxed, and at ease. Again, don't think about the options. Instead, picture yourself having made the choice and notice what you feel.
Learning to listen to your body is a skill and you can practice this with "easier" decisions first. Things like what to eat, what show to watch, or if it's time to text your friend. Over time, you'll get better at making decisions quickly and more confidently.
