What's most important?
/This morning I woke up and I realized that I wasn't going to do what I normally do, which has become go to a yoga class in the morning.
For the past week or more, I've been running around every day getting ready for all kinds of events and transitions in my life. Though I've been going strong and loving it, this morning I realized that what I needed was a big fat break.
It's no secret that I love streaks in habits and I love maintaining them. It had been over a month since the last time life had me miss a day of yoga. The benefits from a regular practice are incredible, but sometimes there are benefits from taking a break.
So instead of getting up at 5am, I let myself sleep in. Then I slowly did my morning pages. Only after that did I calculate the amount of time I had before I needed to leave to work on my clients.
I realized that even though I missed my normal schedule of exercise, I could totally maintain my daily writing and blog posting practice.
And that doing only that is okay.
Now, I'm not advocating using the message here as a way to not motivate yourself for exercise on the regular. But I am encouraging you to get clear on what is most important for you today.
Though I had been striving to go to a yoga class everyday as my way of getting regular movement, it wasn't a hard promise that I made to myself and others.
Posting a blog everyday for this year is. This is my one non-negotiable daily practice.
(Okay, writing my morning pages is also a strong non-negotiable for myself too.)
Being clear on what has to stay when time isn't as abundant, makes it easy to see what has got to go.
We can't do everything everyday. But when we know what is most important, it's easy to give ourselves grace for what isn't.
But mark my words: I will go to yoga tomorrow.
I'll also still do a mini-workout when I'm done writing this because I have a burpee challenge with a friend of mine for this month. So exercise is still happening.
I'm glad I know I don't have to go all out to achieve my goals. I just have to do a little bit everyday.
You tell me:
What are your non-negotiable daily habits?
When pressed for time, how do you modify your habits to still do what's important?
