How To Do Anything Consistently

For many, many years, I've begun each day writing morning pages. The particulars of this ritual has changed over time, but I’ve settled into writing three pages, long-hand, in a journal every morning (or afternoon if my morning gets interrupted).

The younger versions of me would have been amazed at this kind of consistent discipline. If you’re also wondering the same, I’ll let you in on my secret: I didn’t start off doing it this way.

At first, I would only write one page, and not always every day. I wanted to create the habit of writing so the length of the writing was inconsequential to the habit itself. First I focused on making writing in my journal a daily habit. Only then, did I increase the length.

That's how you start anything. It's not the quality or the quantity, it's that you do it at all.

Once the habit is established (any habit), you can tweak the habit.

You can't improve something that you're not already doing. When you're not doing something, just doing it in the smallest way is an improvement.
