Always Start with One Thing

Changing the structure of how we live our lives can be overwhelming. Like any new habit, it's best to start so small we can't fail.

In contrast to my last post about it never being just one thing, when it comes to starting (or re-starting) our healing journey, I always suggest that clients begin with just 1 thing.

Some examples of “one things” to start off with:

  • Track your water and try to meet a daily goal.

  • Take short walk every day.

  • Begin your day with three minutes of mindful meditation.

  • Limit your social media in the mornings.

  • Write down one thing every day that you're grateful for.

None of these feel revolutionary when you begin, but by starting with something super simple you can change the course of your life.

They say that when a plane is traveling long-distance, changing the direction of the plane by one degree can result in arriving in a completely different place. Think about making one degree changes and take the long-view. Making a small change now can result in your life being dramatically different in a month, a year, or a decade from now.

So the question becomes, what's one small thing you can start to change now that can re-set the course of your life?

What I've found is that once we start making 1 degree changes, they begin to add up. But never start with more than one at a time. One is always enough. Before you know it, that change will grow (you'll have so much fun you'll double your walking distance, or three minutes of meditation won't feel like enough so you'll bump to to five or ten). Once that change becomes an established habit, you'll then start to add in more one degree changes.

This is how change is made, one small thing at a time.
