Aromatherapy is Way More than Essential Oils

Lately I've been considering what I want to do with all my knowledge about healing with essential oils. When it comes to this topic, I have a lot of information stored in my brain and decades of experience under my belt.

I was raised by a professional aromatherapist. By the time I was 17 years-old, I had already used my knowledge to help in disaster relief after 9/11. By the time I was 20, I was using them on clients in a professional massage setting. I've taken trainings in aromatic medicine, distillation, natural perfumery, and using essential oils to heal the psyche.

By all accounts, I’m a qualified, experienced, professional aromatherapist.

But for me essential oils are never the focus. Essential oils are a single spoke on the wheel of wellness.

In the world of aromatherapy education, I think this often gets lost. We focus so much on the particulars of an oil, it's chemistry, the research on it, how it's been used in traditional or folk medicine, that sometimes we lose sight of what we're searching for in the first place. This is why calling myself an "aromatherapist" or labeling myself as an "aromatherapy educator" has become so uncomfortable for me.

I don't know about you, but when I engage with essential oils, it's most often because I want to come back to myself. I want to recenter. I want to find clarity. I want to help my body do what it does best: heal itself.

This is why it's taken me so long to come back to a craft that I was born into.

But I want to come back.

I want to help you find ways of using essential oils in this larger context of your upward spiral. I want to combine essential oils with writing, with art, with creativity. I want to help you discover hidden spaces within your heart and mind, to unlock a potential you only dreamed of. I know this is possible.

I think this is ultimately what my mom meant when she taught me that "your perfume becomes your medicine." It's not that it might have properties to help with your bronchitis, your acne, or your anxiety, but that it helps you to become more whole through helping you heal.

I'd love to know:

  • What questions do you have about using essential oils?

  • How would you like to use aromatherapy to heal all aspects of your life?

Leave me all your questions in the comments as I'd love to write about more specific topics that can help you.
