Hot Potato: Poem

Sometimes poems come in parts. They begin, then sit unfinished until the rest reveals itself. That's the story of this poem.

One time, after a heart-break from a short but intense relationship, I had the opening words to this poem come to me. Just like the relationship, they came fast and strong with intense power and lasts of feeling. Then again, like the relationship, the passion petered out and I was left with a half-finished poem that sat in a notebook for months.

A few months went by, I forgot about the poem (and the guy) but paging through a notebook, I found it once again. Reading the words I wrote I felt all those feelings of rejection and pain. When I got to the end of what I had written, I heard the rest of the words flooding through me and finished the poem.

Since the message is ultimately about self-love, I can see why I wasn't able to get there in the midst of my break-up. But once I had healed a bit, that message came through loud and clear.

I hope that by sharing this poem, I can fast-track your own heart ache and help you find that single flame within yourself only you have the power to embrace.

This poem is an audition to be the open act for Rupi Kaur when she comes to Tampa this summer. Wish me luck! Go follow her on Instagram and read all her beautiful words.
