A Break
/I was talking to someone today and they were saying, "We've all just been through so much in the past few years ... sometimes I think, 'Can't I just take a vacation from learning lessons?'"
I couldn't help it.
"You know you can. Take a vacation, that is."
"Huh?"
"Yeah, you can just ignore the lessons. You can take that vacation as long as you want."
I'm all for learning lessons but also all for avoiding them. I won't glorify or demonize either. Sometimes you don't have the capacity to deal with something and you need to ignore it. I ignored a bunch of stuff in the wake of my grief after the loss of my dad and business. And some of the things did grow and eventually become bigger deals than they needed to be.
And that's okay.
They admitted that the longer you ignore something though, the bigger it gets and it comes back to bite you in the ass.
The important part is to know that you have a choice and make your choices wisely. It's one thing to say to yourself, "I just can't deal with this right now and will accept it getting worse for a time until i can deal with it." But it's a whole other thing altogether to by-pass the conscious choice of checking out and check out without giving your notice.
No matter what the choice, make sure it's informed. If you check out without having the conversation with yourself that that's what you're doing because that's what's best for you right now, you're setting yourself to a rude awakening later.
It's already going to be hard to come back to it, so don't make it harder. Choose your vacations wisely.
